History HiJinx: "Going Places" Wheelie Workshop

To get ready for the Flint Hills International Children's Festival Artmoves Parade on June 4 in St. Paul's Rice Park, take the History Center's junkyard challenge. Visit the museum exhibit, "Going Places: The Mystique of Mobility," for inspiration and then join a hands-on workshop and use cardboard, wire, duct tape, mylar, straws, bottle caps and piles of wheels to build a pull-toy racecar, rocket or just plain crazy contraption. The History Center and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts team up to provide the supplies and expert assistance to make your art car and information about how to enter the parade.

19th-Century Paintings from the Permanent Collection

James J. Hill House, St. Paul MN

A selection of 19th-century oil paintings from the Minnesota Historical Society's permanent collection features nearly 20 works documenting some of the most prominent people, places and events of Minnesota. It includes portraits of leaders such as Gov. Henry Sibley, business leader James J. Hill and a Dakota woman affectionately known as "Old Bets." Landscapes capture historic views of Minnehaha Falls and Fort Snelling, while events such as the singing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux are depicted. The exhibition is ongoing and new works will be rotated into the exhibit over the coming months.

The James J. Hill House art gallery originally showcased Hill's collection of French landscape painting and is now a dedicated space for showcasing the work of Minnesota art and artists, and chronicling the region's art history.

This collection of 81 Speed Graphic photographs from the collections of the St. Paul Pioneer Press is inspired by Larry Millett's new book, "Strange Days, Dangerous Nights: Photos from the Speed Graphic Era," (MHS Press, 2004). Minnesota's own Millett unearthed more than 200 images – automobile accidents, urban curiosities, celebrities, fires, murders, and other news that fought for the hot spot on the front page – from the archives of the Pioneer Press and St. Paul Dispatch. This exhibit explores the romance, rituals, myths and realities of courtship, weddings and commitment ceremonies. Some highlights are a two-tier oversized "cake" featuring wedding dresses from the Society's collections and an opportunity for visitors to pose for photos as living cake toppers; a movie screen with home video and commercial film footage of ceremonies; a recreated 1940s threshold; a display of wedding day icons, including rings, flowers and veils; wedding gifts across time, opened and unopened; a guest book; and a Victorian linen-draped head table with a centerpiece and table settings for the wedding party.

Charles Beck Woodcuts

This exhibit features a collection of woodcut prints by Minnesota artist Charles Beck, who has created over 150 woodcut prints in a nearly sixty year career. His works have been displayed at the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The exhibit will be on display in the museum's Mill Commons through Oct. 31, and is free and open to the public during regular museum hours.

This History Center exhibit, celebrating the centennial of the State Capitol, runs through 2005. The Capitol, one of the grandest monuments of the American Renaissance, opened to the public on Jan. 2, 1905. The exhibit features original architectural drawings and furnishings designed by Capitol architect Cass Gilbert, as well as artwork by Daniel Chester French, who created the famed golden "Quadriga" sculpture on the Capitol facade, and Edwin Blashfield, one of the Capitol's many muralists.

The exhibit features a series of settings where music is produced and enjoyed – a home parlor, a ballroom, a high school band room, a concert hall, a deejay booth, a tent and an instrument store. Visitors can see and hear the stories of Minnesotans whose lives have been affected by music, and mix their own songs in the "Studio 4U." Step into Minnesota's earliest years and explore the state's roots as an organized political entity. Eyewitness accounts of life in Minnesota Territory, drawn from letters, journals and articles of the era, as well as multimedia "object theater" devoted to the Dakota and Ojibwe treaties of 1851 are part of the exhibit. Covering 4,000 square feet and including about 150 artifacts, "Tales of the Territory" offers personal glimpses into life at the tumultuous time in the state's history. Grainland traces the journey of wheat and corn from farm to town to grain elevator. Children will enjoy climbing through a replica grain elevator where bins and chutes are replaced with steps and slides and curving nooks and crannies to explore. Minnesotans do more than talk about the weather.
