Dance, Sing, Make a Craft, and More at History Center Kwanzaa Celebration

The History Center's annual Kwanzaa Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. will feature music, dance, storytelling and a craft activity among other events. This years celebration takes place on the second day of Kwanzaa, with activities that focus on the principle, Kujichagulia, a Swahili word meaning self-determination.

  • Craft Activity, Noon to 4 p.m.: Make West African inspired door panels out of cardboard, raffia and textured material.
  • Storytelling, 12:15 and 1:45 p.m.: Join "Auntie Beverly" as she introduces folk heroes, cultural tricksters and old tales.
  • Music, 1 p.m.: Kenna Sarge and Voice of Culture will showcase West African rhythms.
  • Fashion, 2 p.m.: African Global Roots will present a fashion show of African inspired American designs.
  • Dance, 3 p.m.: Tiyumba Dance Company will dance, sing and drum.
  • Shopping, Noon to 4 p.m.: Explore the Kwanzaa Market Place for unique artisan crafted items, many representing West African countries.

All events are included with regular museum admission of $10 adults, $8 seniors and college students, $5 children ages 6-17; free for children age 5 and under and MHS members.

The Minnesota History Center is located at 345 Kellogg Blvd. W. in St. Paul. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
