Library Classes Offer Patrons Chance to Record and Research History

Two special Minnesota Historical Society Library classes in March will offer participants the chance to dig deeper into their own research.

On March 14, James E. Fogerty, head of documentary programs for the Society, will describe oral history – what it is and how to use it to record family and community histories. Oral history is one of the most exciting tools available for collecting and preserving history. The presentation, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., will include comments on legal considerations, ethics and the equipment necessary to do the job.

On March 25, government records specialist Duane Swanson will show how to sort through Minnesota court records at the library. Swanson’s presentation will cover records from probate, civil, criminal, justice-of-the-peace, municipal, district, supreme, and appellate courts. The class will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Cost for each class is $8 or $6 for members of the Minnesota Historical Society or Minnesota Genealogical Society. Reservations are required. A free weekly introductory class is also offered by the library year round. “I’m New Here: Introduction to the Library” takes place every Saturday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.

The Minnesota Historical Society Library is located in the History Center at 345 Kellogg Blvd. W. in St. Paul. Auxiliary aids and services are available with notice of five working days (call 651-296-6126). Regular library hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The Minnesota Historical Society is a non-profit educational and cultural institution established in 1849 to preserve and share Minnesota history. The Society collects, preserves and tells the story of Minnesota’s past through museum exhibits, libraries and collections, historic sites, educational programs and book publishing.
